Business Class Descriptions

ACCOUNTING I* - Entry-level course consisting of studying Accounting, from simple debits and credits through the complete accounting cycle. The content includes principles and practices and applying learned procedures in accounting.

 

ACCOUNTING II* - Continues the process in the complete accounting cycle, emphasizing partnership accounts for a merchandising business. Includes journaling purchases and cash payments, sales and cash receipts, posting to ledgers, business transactions, worksheets, financial statements, partnerships, closing entries, and fiscal period work.

 

ACCOUNTING III* - Continues the accounting cycle, emphasizing corporate accounting for merchandising. This includes special journals, payroll records, payroll accounting, taxes, business transactions, uncollected accounts receivable, depreciation, notes, interest, accrued items, vouchers, petty cash, and inventory systems.

 

BASIC BUSINESS SKILLS - Students will obtain knowledge in comparing/proofreading, spelling, and defining new words, completing business forms, banking and checking skills, referencing, prioritizing, and effective internet research.

 

FILING* - Teaches students to distinguish between indexing and filing, the ability to perform alphabetic, numeric, geographic, and subject filing, and arranging and scanning materials to be stored on a computer in an orderly manner.

 

JOB READINESS/SKILLS FOR SUCCESS - This class will assist students in overcoming barriers to employment with hands-on activities such as job applications, resumes, references, cover letters, and interviewing skills. Other topics include hygiene/grooming for work, time management, and communication skills.

 

KEYBOARDING I* - Teaches touch typing, navigating the keyboard and performing keyboarding drills, working with memos and business letters, and saving files to folders. Includes typing certification.

 

KEYBOARDING II* - This class will include word processing tasks and developing various business documents, performing keyboarding drills for speed and accuracy, and exhibiting improved keyboarding skills. Includes typing certification.

 

MACHINE CALCULATION* - Teaches the use of the calculator by learning the 10-key touch method and computing business math problems (interest, discounts, sales slips, etc.) Verified accuracy and proofread/edited business documents. Includes ten key certifications. 125 nspm minimum.

 

QUICKBOOKS - Information Support and Services/QUICKBOOKS is a course in computer accounting. It is offered for students who have some experience with computers and accounting principles. It will provide the learner with the knowledge, skills, and background necessary to understand and use the QuickBooks program to assist in running the accounting end of a business. Students exiting this course have obtained skills in the workforce concerning employment in the accounting or office field.

 

RECORD KEEPING I, II - Students will become acquainted with common business forms and activities by completing job simulations for six different types of businesses: direct sales, apartment management, restaurants, retail stores, distribution centers, and independent markets.

 

Record Keeping I - Students will complete the job simulations.

Record Keeping II - Students will complete the second three job simulations.

 

SIMULATED OFFICE DEVELOPMENT* - Open to students interested in a business career who have met the prerequisites for the class. Students will gain on-the-job training and experience performing clerical tasks in a business office environment. It will be necessary to carry out oral and written directions effectively, maintain work relationships, and work in a team environment. Students must dress appropriately for the job and demonstrate practical verbal and non-verbal communication skills in entrance and exit mock interviews.
