ESL Class Descriptions

ESL BEGINNING LITERACY — This course is for students who cannot read or write in either their native language or in English.

 

ESL BEGINNING LOW — This course is for students who are literate in their native language but speak, read, write, and understand little or no English.

 

ESL BEGINNING HIGH — This course is designed for students with limited ability to communicate their needs using simple phrases and sentences.

 

ESL INTERMEDIATE LOW — This course is designed to strengthen communication skills for work or social settings and to enable students to participate comfortably in community activities.

 

ESL INTERMEDIATE HIGH — This course teaches students to follow written directions, comprehend conversations containing unfamiliar vocabulary, participate in face-to-face discussions, and make themselves understood.

 

ESL INTERMEDIATE HIGH/WRITING — This course is designed to provide students with skills in writing academic paragraphs that will prepare them to study for their GED or High School Diploma. In addition, they will learn to write letters that will help them in their family and work lives.

 

ESL ADVANCED LOW/WRITING — This course is designed to provide students with skills in writing academic essays that will prepare them for the workplace and to help them study for their GED or high school diploma.

 

ESL ADVANCED HIGH — This course is designed to improve Career Readiness skills and conversational abilities. Students will increase their vocabulary, improve test-taking strategies, and generate individual speaking/conversational opportunities based on each lesson.

 

ESL BEGINNING LOW LISTENING/SPEAKING — This course is designed to provide students with additional experience developing listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills. Pronunciation and speaking units are tied to life skill topics such as parts of the body, the post office, food, tools, a coffee shop, a kitchen, riding the bus, etc.

 

ESL INTERMEDIATE LOW LISTENING/SPEAKING — This course is designed to build upon the foundation of basic oral skills & develop verbal skills that are more sophisticated. Pronunciation and speaking units are tied to life skills topics such as health, food, community, work, leisure, etc.

 

ESL MULTI-LEVEL — This multi-level course is designed to develop the ability to listen and understand commonly used words and phrases in context, communicate survival needs in simple terms, and read and comprehend the meaning of simple narrative passages and written sentences based on learned material.

 

ESL MULTI-LEVEL (CTE) — This multi-level course will focus on Basic Business Skills and Keyboarding. Students will earn certificates and elective credit in the Vocational ESL Class when they meet the necessary skill level.

 

ESL CITIZENSHIP/PREPARATION — This will assist students in acquiring English Language skills and the knowledge and understanding of principles and forms of government, the Constitution, and the history, culture, institutions, and geography of the United States. Students will learn interviewing skills in preparation for the INS oral interview."
