GED Preparation

Where do I get information about taking the assessment/ testing required before I enter the GED program?
Bakersfield Adult School’s Assessment Centers are located in Room 121 (for ESL), in the North Wing of the campus (enter gate 2). For Basic Skills, GED and HS Diploma report to Room 505 (enter gate 4).

Placement Tests are required for registration into any one of the following programs:
- Diploma (Independent Study)
- GED (GED Distance Learning)
- Basic Skills
- ESL (English as a Second Language

These tests are administered as follows:
Mondays 8:00 am; 1:00 pm;
First 3 weeks of each semester and two weeks prior to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters

Tuesdays 8:00 am; 1:00 pm; and 6:00 pm
First 3 weeks of each semester and two weeks prior to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters

(When there is a Monday holiday, testing will be offered Tuesday 8:00am, 1:00pm and 6:00pm,)

GED Preparation Classes

GED preparation classes are available to anyone wishing to prepare for the GED test. We urge potential GED examinees to register for classes listed at the locations below:

  • Daytime classes are held at the Bakersfield Adult School main campus at 501 So. Mt. Vernon Ave. Enrollment and placement testing is held every Monday - 8am and 1pm and Tuesday at 8:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.
  • Evening classes are also held at the Bakersfield Adult School Main Campus at 501 South Mount Vernon Ave. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. - 9:10 p.m.
  • GED Distance Learning opportunities are also available at Bakersfield Adult School, 501 S. Mt. Vernon Ave., for students preparing for the GED. Go to the Distance Learning website or call 661.827.8918 for further information about this program.

BAS has a GED Scholarship Program which provides a one-time fee reduction for students who enroll in a GED Preparation class and who attend a minimum of 20 hours. The fee reduction does not apply to re-testing.

Official GED Testing Center

Bakersfield Adult School is recognized by the American Council on Education as an official GED testing center. Adults 18 and older are eligible to take this test. The fee for the complete GED test is $110.00 CASH. Valid photo identification is required (valid driver's license, California ID card, or passport). The five (5) tests given are:

  • Language Arts - Writing
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies


GED Test Registration & General Information

Adults 18 years or older are eligible to take this test. Advance registration for GED testing is required. Valid Photo I.D. is required both at time of registration and before being admitted to the testing room.

  • Registration may be done on Monday and Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m . Call 661-835-1855, Ext. 61150 for further information.

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma.

  • Daytime GED testing takes two days, Thursday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

  • Afternoon/Early Evening testing is offered once a month and takes three afternoons, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 2:00 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. , to complete the entire test.

  • Fee is $110.00 CASH ONLY for first test in all five subjects.

  • $20.00 CASH for a re-test in any one of the five subjects.

REGISTRATION for GED TESTING
Steps for Self-Referred and CalWORKs students/clients to register for the GED Test:
Step 1
Examinee:
a. goes to the Finance Office;
b. pays the $110.00 test fee IN CASH/ $82.00 with GED class scholarship
attendance verification form (or $20.00 CASH for retaking any one individual test);
CalWORKs must have a contract on file with the finance office
authorizing payment for the test;
c. is given an information sheet with a receipt of payment attached;
d. is directed to the Data Processing/Assessment Office 121A (next
to room 121) to sign up for a test date.

Step 2
Examinee:
a. reports to the Data Processing/Assessment Office with receipt to
register for the GED (allow at least 30 minutes to complete demographic);
b. must have a valid picture with signature ID in order to register
for the exam (an official DMV driver’s license, Ca ID, or a passport, for example);
c. completes a demographic form and reserves a test date.
d. is given specific GED information, orally and in writing, as to
time to report, test regulations, etc.
