Health related vocational training at Bakersfield Adult School's "F" Street Health Careers Center provides a balanced blend of classroom and supervised clinical site training. Students who successfully complete their program will receive a certificate of completion and are prepared to take the state test, if applicable, and enter the job market.

Programs Offered

Vocational Nurse
Cost: $6,000 plus NCLEX fee

 

Next mandatory VN orientations are January 2018
22-month program includes:

Year 1: Mondays & Tuesdays, half-day Thursdays occasional Fridays
Year 2: Wednesdays, Thursdays, and most Fridays
Classroom Hours: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
Clinical Hours: 11:00 am - 8:10 pm (hours vary)

Medical Assistant
Cost: $950

Monday through Friday
8:20 am to 3:00 pm 18 to 20 weeks
Spring Semester Class: Jan 8, - May 11, 2018

Medical Assistant students benefit from a balanced blend of classroom and supervised clinical site training at local medical offices and clinics. All trainees receive “Skills for Success” instruction throughout their training period to enhance employment potential. Upon successful completion, students are recommended to take the California Certifying Board for Medical Assistants exam.

Entry Requirements:

Adult students must:

  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Attend one mandatory orientation session
  • Pass TABE Math & Reading test at or above TABE 8.0 and score among the top applicants for the course
  • Have no convictions and pass FBI and Department of Justice fingerprint clearance
  • Pass drug screening, prior to acceptance
  • Have Social Security card or “Right to Work” in USA

 


Physical Requirements

Adult students must:
 
  • Bring record of “up to date” immunizations
  • Pass a health examination
  • Receive a TB clearance
  • Be able to lift, bend/stoop, walk and stand as necessary for job duties

Nurse Assistant
Cost: $800

Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 2:30 pm 15 weeks
Spring Semester 1/16/18 – 5/4/18
American Red Cross certification testing at the end of course

Nurse Assistant students benefit from a balanced blend of classroom and supervised clinical site training at local convalescent homes and hospitals. All trainees receive “Skills for Success” instruction throughout their training period to enhance employment potential. Upon successful completion, students are recommended to take the California state CNA exam. This course also fulfills an entry requirement for the Vocational Nursing Program and articulates with Bakersfield College.

Entry Requirements:

Adult students must:

  • Have a GED or High School Diploma
  • Attend one mandatory orientation session
  • Pass TABE Math & Reading tests at or above TABE 7.0 and score among the top applicants for the course
  • Have no convictions
  • Pass fingerprint clearance required through the Department of Justice
  • Pass drug screen prior to start of class
  • Have valid California ID
  • Have Social Security card or “Right to Work” in USA

 

Physical Requirements:

Adult students must:
 
  • Bass a health examination, drug test and TB clearance
  • Be able to lift, bend/stoop, walk, and stand as necessary for job duties
  • Bring record of “up to date” immunizations
  • Be able to assist an adult (150 lbs) with bathing and moving from bed to wheelchair.

Healthcare Support Occupations
Cost: $600

Students in the Healthcare Support Occupations program benefit from a balanced blend of classroom and supervised clinical site training at local hospitals, clinics and related medical offices. In addition, all trainees receive job readiness training and introductory computer skills instruction.

Entry Requirements:

Adult students must:

  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Attend one mandatory orientation session
  • Pass TABE Math & Reading tests at or above TABE 7.0 and score among the top applicants for the course
  • Have no convictions and pass FBI and Department of Justice fingerprint clearance
  • Pass drug screen prior to start of class
  • Have valid California ID
  • Have Social Security card or “Right to Work” in USA

This course prepares students to work in the following jobs:

Entry level health related occupations.

Medical Billing and Coding
Cost: $1200

You will develop skills in insurance billing using MediSoft, a computerized practice management program. You will get a complete guide to the latest on ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT coding along with the basics on hospital billing, patient scheduling, health insurance plans, and medical terminology. Upon successful completion, students are recommended to take the National Healthcare Association CBCS exam.

  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Attend one mandatory orientation session
  • Pass TABE Math & Reading test at or above TABE 8.0 and score among the top applicants for the course
  • Have Social Security Card or “Right to Work” in USA

Certified Home Health Aide Course HHA
Cost: $125

Prerequisites:

  1. Must have current California CNA (need copy)
  2. Must have current CPR /BLS (need copy)
  3. Current TB clearance - ppd- skin test or X-ray -within 1 year (need copy)
    Vouchers will be provided for CPR/BLS and TB clearance

Schedule:

Classroom 20 hours
Dates: November 8, 15, 29, & December 6, 2017

Clinical 20 hours
Dates: December 11, 12, 13, 14, 2017

Phlebotomy CPT I
Cost: $800

(includes cost of, uniforms, physical; TB testing, drug screen, books, fingerprinting, initial certification application to National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) and application with the California Department of Public Health/Laboratory Field Services.

Class limit 24 student.
 

General Information

CPT I (Certified Phlebotomy technician) or phlebotomist, are professionals who draw blood from patients. Blood samples are obtained by venipuncture for further laboratory examination for health issues, like- diseases, bacteria, cholesterol, etc. Phlebotomists can work in all kinds of medical facilities, from hospitals, clinics, urgent cares to private laboratories.
 

Dates:

Spring 2018
January 9, 2018 – May 31, 2018
Class time: Tuesdays / Thursdays 8:00am – 1:30pm

 

Entry Requirements:

  • Pass a background check (FBI, DOJ, OIG)
  • Adult 18 years of age or older
  • Pass TABE Math & Language assessment 8.0 score or higher
  • Excellent language and writing skills.
  • Pass drug screening
  • Valid California ID
  • Current SS card or United States Work Permit
  • Physical exam
  • Health Requirements

    The Phlebotomist must have:
  • fine motor coordination;
  • normal hearing
  • good visual acuity with ability to distinguish major colors
  • Must be able, to move readily from one location to another in the hospital and various drawing sites.
    Medium lifting – generally not more than 50 lbs. Maximum with frequent lifting and / or carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
