English as a Second Language

The mission of the Bakersfield Adult School's English as a Second Language Department is to provide the language skills and opportunities to enrich the lives of our students by encouraging them to become life long learners and achieve personal success.

Course Offerings

Bakersfield Adult School offers a variety of ESL classes to assist in meeting the needs of students at various skill levels of English language proficiency. We offer courses for students from the pre-literate or non-reading or writing level (Level 0) to the advanced levels (Levels 5 and 6).

How To Enroll

Come to Bakersfield Adult School at 501 South Mount Vernon Avenue (enter gate 2 from Mount Vernon Ave).

Report to the Testing Office (Room 121). You will fill out several forms and take some tests to determine your level of understanding. A schedule will be issued to you and you will be placed in a class appropriate for your needs.

These tests are administered as follows:
Mondays 8:00 am; 1:00 pm;
Two weeks prior to each quarter with possible additional assessments depending on space availability.

Tuesdays 8:00 am; 1:00 pm; and 5:30 pm;
Two weeks prior to each quarter with possible additional assessments depending on space availability.

Class Times

Daytime Classes- Mount Vernon site
Monday to Friday
8:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m.
10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Evening Classes- Mount Vernon site
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
6:00 p.m. to 9:10 p.m.
